Former NPP campaigner · Founder, The Base – Ghana First Party
What is happening?
Ghana's entertainment industry and political circles have been buzzing since veteran Kumawood actor Agya Koo made a stunning move away from his long-standing association with the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Reports indicate the actor has stormed Accra to take the necessary steps to formally register his new political movement, "The Base – Ghana First Party" (GFP), with the Electoral Commission of Ghana.
The development marks a dramatic escalation from announcement to action, as the actor moves to transform what began as a public declaration into a fully-fledged, registered political party capable of contesting future elections.
Founded by Agya Koo as a third-force alternative to the NPP and NDC, drawing support from all 16 regions of Ghana.
How it all started — the Kejetia moment
The seeds of the movement were planted on the streets of Kumasi. On April 10, 2026, Agya Koo and his team descended on Kejetia — one of the busiest marketplaces in West Africa — to listen directly to ordinary Ghanaians. Traders, drivers, graduates, and everyday citizens poured out their frustrations about economic hardship and disillusionment with the two dominant parties.
The post generated over 27,000 views on X (formerly Twitter) within days, signalling significant public interest in the movement. Shortly after, Agya Koo gave a full media interview formally announcing the Ghana First Party, outlining its vision and the nationwide groundwork already underway across all sixteen regions.
Why Agya Koo left the NPP
For over a decade, Agya Koo was one of the NPP's most visible celebrity supporters. He played a significant role in former president Nana Akufo-Addo's election victories in both 2016 and 2020, using his massive public platform to campaign vigorously for the party across the country.
His break with the NPP, however, appears rooted in the outcome of the January 31, 2026, NPP presidential primaries. Agya Koo had been a close associate and outspoken supporter of former Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong — one of the most high-profile figures to contest the NPP flagbearer race. Agyapong was ultimately defeated by former Vice President Dr. Mahamud Bawumia, who won with 56.48% of the vote compared to Agyapong's 23.76%.
Following Agyapong's loss, Agya Koo's disillusionment with the NPP became increasingly apparent — culminating in his decision to chart an entirely new political path.

The political landscape he is entering
Ghana's two-party political system has historically made it very difficult for third parties to gain meaningful traction. However, growing public frustration with both the NDC and NPP — particularly around economic hardship — has created what Agya Koo and his allies believe is a genuine opening for a new political force.
Who is Agya Koo?
Born Alexander Adu Kofi on May 25, 1969, Agya Koo grew up in Asantewaa, a suburb of Accra Newtown. He worked as a cobbler before discovering his passion for comedy and acting and rose to national fame through the Key Soap Concert Party show on GTV. He made his film debut in 1999 with Kumasi Yonko and quickly became one of Ghana's most beloved and versatile entertainers.
His filmography includes iconic titles such as Obaatanpa, Away Bus, Black Star, Ma Tricki Wo, and Boys Abre. Known for his improvisation and humour, Agya Koo has long been one of the most recognisable faces in Kumawood and Ghanaian popular culture.

What happens next
For The Base – Ghana First Party to contest elections in Ghana, it must complete the Electoral Commission's registration process, which includes meeting membership and structural requirements across the country. With Agya Koo reportedly already in Accra to initiate this process, the movement's transition from concept to official political party appears imminent.
Whether the Ghana First Party can translate its social media buzz and public goodwill into genuine electoral support ahead of Ghana's next general election remains the key question — one that political analysts and ordinary Ghanaians are watching very closely.
